Two-Round Crochet Star – Free Christmas Ornament Pattern

Advertisements

This two-round crochet star uses five small groups at the center and five open fan points around the edge. Make each star in one color, then combine red, ivory, and forest green motifs for a Christmas garland or a set of gift tags.

The first round establishes five chain spaces. The second round puts a six-stitch fan into each space and anchors it in the center of the next group. These lower anchors draw in the valleys between the points.

The pattern is an original interpretation inspired by the reference photo. Its two-round sequence has its own stitch counts. Use the written steps and symbol charts for placement, and shape the five tip openings during finishing.

Two-Round Crochet Star Materials

  • Smooth cotton yarn in your chosen color. Use the same yarn family in red, ivory, and forest green if you want a coordinated set.
  • A hook suited to the yarn, a tapestry needle, scissors, and a removable stitch marker.
  • Optional rustproof pins and a blocking mat.

No fixed gauge is required for this decorative motif. Finished size and yarn use depend on your yarn, hook, and tension. A smooth yarn helps you identify the three separate stitch tops in each center group. Use the same hook for both rounds.

US Crochet Terms

  • MR = magic ring
  • ch = chain
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • dc = double crochet
  • st(s) = stitch(es)
  • sp = space

A group of 3 dc means three complete double crochets in the same insertion point. Each has its own top loops. For the standard US terms used here, see the Craft Yarn Council crochet abbreviation guide.

Starting chains and joins

The ch 2 at the beginning of each round gives the working loop height and is excluded from the count. Join to the first working dc. Work with the same side facing you throughout, and fasten off after Round 1 so Round 2 can begin directly in a chain space.

Round 1 — five center groups

Make an MR and ch 2. Work [3 dc into the ring, ch 2] five times. Sl st to the first dc and fasten off. Pull the ring gently closed, keeping the stitch tops easy to see.

Count 15 dc and five ch-2 spaces. There are five groups of three dc. Mark the middle dc of each group if you need help finding the valley anchors in Round 2. The final ch 2 is the fifth space.

Round 2 — five fan points

Attach yarn with a sl st in any ch-2 space and ch 2. In that same space, work (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc). Sl st into the middle dc of the next Round 1 group.

Move to the next ch-2 space and work (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in it. Sl st into the middle dc of the next center group. Repeat until every ch-2 space holds one fan and every center group has one valley slip stitch in its middle dc.

After the fifth valley slip stitch, join with a separate sl st to the first dc of the first fan. Fasten off and weave the tail into the back of the fan stitches.

Count 30 dc, five ch-3 tip spaces, and five valley sl sts. The attachment slip stitch and final joining slip stitch are additional. Each point has three dc before its tip and three after it. The two outside dc of each old center group stay unworked in Round 2.

115 dc in five groupsFive ch-2 spaces
230 dc and five valley sl stsFive ch-3 tip spaces

Round 2 has five repeats. Each repeat uses one chain space for the whole fan and one middle dc for the valley anchor. Before cutting the yarn, trace the edge and check that all five fans are separated by a low slip stitch.

Finishing and Optional Hanger

Secure the MR tail by weaving it through the backs of several center stitches, then reverse direction before trimming. Weave the outer tail within a fan, keeping it clear of the open tip space.

If your yarn label permits damp blocking, lightly dampen the star and place it on a flat surface. Pin the five ch-3 tips at even distances from the center. Ease the valleys inward with your fingers and let the star dry completely before removing the pins.

For an optional hanger, ch 18 in the star color or ivory, then fasten off with tails at both ends. Fold the chain in half and sew the tails securely through the backs of the dc beside one tip. Keep the tip opening visible. The complete chart includes this separate chain.

For a garland, make several stars in the same yarn weight. Thread a cord through one tip opening of each star and adjust the spacing before securing the ends. To use a motif as a gift tag, tie a removable cord through the tip and attach the paper label behind it.

Troubleshooting

There are four points instead of five

Check Round 1 for five groups and five spaces. The last space sits beside the join and can become tight. Count the chain pairs individually before beginning the fans. If Round 1 has only four spaces, remake it so all five fans have a place to sit.

The star looks like a flower

Confirm that every fan has a ch-3 tip and that the valleys attach to the middle dc of the old groups. A valley attached to an outer dc will sit off center. Gentle blocking helps define the tips once the counts and anchors match.

A fan twists around its chain space

Spread its first three dc along one side of the space and its last three along the other. Keep the ch 3 relaxed. If the space is too tight to hold all six dc, remake the Round 1 chains with a little more ease.

The final join looks bulky

Mark the first working dc before making Round 2. After the fifth valley, join to that dc. Keep the joining slip stitch loose enough to match the edge. Avoid adding another fan or an extra valley anchor at the beginning-chain area.
