Flat Crochet Baubles – Free Christmas Ornament Pattern

Advertisements

Flat crochet baubles turn a few rounds of colored yarn into light Christmas ornaments. A small gray or taupe cap and a white embroidered shine give each circle the look of a familiar tree bauble, with a completely flat construction.

This original interpretation is inspired by the reference image rather than presented as its exact recipe. The disk grows through four joined rounds of double crochet. A separate single-crochet rectangle becomes the cap, and a short chain forms the hanging loop.

Make one circle in your chosen yarn before starting a matching set. The ribbed crochet Christmas bow adds a different texture beside these simple rounds. Red, yellow and green work well together, but the same stitch counts apply to any color.

Materials for flat crochet baubles

  • Smooth sport or DK cotton yarn in your chosen disk colors.
  • Gray or taupe yarn of similar thickness for the cap and chain hanger.
  • A small amount of white yarn, preferably the same weight or slightly finer, for the shine.
  • A crochet hook suited to the yarn. A 3 mm hook is a starting choice for DK, adjusted to your tension.
  • A blunt yarn needle, scissors, removable markers and rustproof blocking pins.
  • Optional separate cord for attaching the ornament to a tree branch.

No stuffing is used. This project suits a beginner familiar with joined rounds, increases and simple sewing. Finished dimensions, gauge and yarn consumption have not been established from a physical sample. The pattern has not been physically tested. The complete chart follows the written stitch counts; the photographs illustrate the intended styling rather than a tested stitch-for-stitch sample.

US terms and working notes

ch = chain; sc = single crochet; dc = double crochet; sl st = slip stitch; st/sts = stitch/stitches; inc = 2 dc in the same stitch. The Craft Yarn Council crochet abbreviation guide lists the standard US terminology.

Work the circle with the right side facing you throughout. Do not turn between rounds. The beginning ch 2 does not count as a dc, and the joining sl st does not count as a stitch. Start each round in the same stitch as the join and join to the first real dc.

For dc, yarn over, insert into the indicated stitch or ring and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through two loops, then repeat that final step once. For an increase, complete two separate dc in the same stitch top. They share an insertion point but have separate tops.

Round 1: the center

With the disk color, make a magic ring. Ch 2 and work 12 dc into the ring. Pull the ring closed and sl st into the first dc. Count: 12 dc.

Mark the first dc to distinguish it from the starting chain. Weave the ring tail through the backs of several stitches so the opening stays closed; do not rely only on pulling the tail tight.

Round 2: increase in every stitch

Ch 2. Work 2 dc in each of the 12 stitches. Join to the first dc. Count: 24 dc.

Round 3: alternate one dc and an increase

Ch 2. Repeat [dc in the next stitch, 2 dc in the next stitch] twelve times. Join to the first dc. Count: 36 dc.

Each repeat uses two stitches from Round 2 and makes three. Twelve repeats use all 24 base stitches. A marker after every repeat can help if the increase tops become difficult to distinguish.

Round 4: two plain stitches between increases

Ch 2. Repeat [dc in each of the next 2 stitches, 2 dc in the next stitch] twelve times. Join to the first dc and fasten off. Count: 48 dc.

Secure the final tail on the back. There is no additional border round. The final dc tops form the outside edge, and their slight faceting can be eased during blocking if your yarn allows it.

Make the separate cap

With gray or taupe, ch 6.

Row 1: Sc in the second chain from the hook and in each remaining chain. 5 sc.

Rows 2–4: Ch 1 and turn. Sc through both loops of every stitch across. 5 sc each row. Fasten off, leaving a sewing tail.

The cap contains 20 sc in total. Its turning ch 1 does not count. Keep the rectangle flat and leave its foundation edge easy to identify for sewing.

Make the chain hanger

Using the cap color, make a slip knot and ch 10. Fasten off, leaving tails at both ends. This is a separate chain strand, with no crochet joining stitch.

Fold the chain into a loop. Its ends will be sewn to the upper center of the cap during finishing. The ten-chain loop is a starting decorative size; if you need it to pass around a thick branch, use a separate attachment cord rather than stretching it.

The disk has twelve increases in every round after the center. Count stitch tops rather than the vertical posts, and keep the chains and joining slip stitches separate from the totals.

Block and sew the cap

Lay the disk flat before adding the other pieces. If the yarn care label permits wet blocking, dampen it gently, press out excess water in a towel and arrange the edge into an even circle. Pin without stretching individual stitches and allow it to dry completely.

Choose a top position, preferably where the cap can cover the round joins. Center the cap’s five-stitch foundation edge over five consecutive outer dc. Let the bottom edge overlap the disk slightly so the pieces have a firm sewing area.

With the sewing tail, attach the cap through its foundation loops and those five outer dc. Take a second relaxed pass if needed, without pulling the disk into a fold. Secure the tail on the back.

Sew both ends of the ten-chain hanger to the upper center of the cap. Carry and secure the tails down the back through the cap and into a few disk stitches so the hanging load is shared. Keep the tails hidden from the front.

Add the white reflected shine

Thread the needle with white yarn and plan a short curved line in the upper-right section of the disk, just inside the outer edge. A left-side highlight is an optional styling variation shown in the collage. Keep it clear of the cap seam.

Work a few small backstitches along the curve: bring the needle up ahead, then insert it back into the end of the preceding stitch. Let the white yarn rest on the crochet surface without pulling. Secure both ends on the back, and check that the circle still lies flat.

There is no fixed embroidery stitch total because the line length depends on your disk size and stitch length. A short soft arc is enough; avoid a long loose strand that could snag.

Troubleshooting flat crochet baubles

The circle cups

Check for a missed increase. Round 3 repeats one dc followed by two dc in the same stitch; Round 4 repeats two plain dc followed by an increase. If every count is correct, try a different hook size on a new disk rather than forcing the center flat.

The outside edge ruffles

Count 48 dc in the final round. An increase accidentally worked in every other stitch of Round 4 adds too many stitches. Do not crochet into the joining slip stitch or starting ch 2 as extra bases.

The cap tilts

Check its five-stitch width and the five attachment dc. Reposition it before tightening the seam. A seam pulling from one corner can tilt the rectangle even when its crochet counts are correct.

The hanger stretches the top

Make sure its sewing tails catch cap and disk stitches on the back. Use a separate cord around the branch, and keep the crocheted chain as a small loop rather than pulling it over a large branch.

The shine puckers the disk

Loosen the white stitches or remove and resew them. Short backstitches should follow the fabric’s curve without gathering it. Complete blocking before adding this detail.

Display and storage

Use the same yarn and hook for a coordinated set, or change disk colors while keeping the caps neutral. The pieces can hang individually or become appliques on gift bags. Sew an applique around its edge with relaxed stitches rather than depending on its hanger.

Pair them with the crochet jingle bell star or the spiral crochet Christmas tree. Store the disks flat, with the loops laid above them. Clean according to the yarn and cord labels and let them dry completely before packing them away.

Flat crochet baubles: pins and complete chart

The first three images offer styling ideas. The final three show the complete symbol chart, the increase repeats and the finishing positions. The complete chart includes every dc in all four rounds, starting chains and joins, all cap stitches and its turning chains, plus the separate ten-chain hanger. It follows the written counts without claiming physical testing.
