This golden crochet gingerbread ornament has a round head, short rounded arms, and two open loop legs. The hollow teardrop shapes give the lower half a light outline, while a white-and-yellow cord bow adds a small contrast at the neck.
Make the head, torso, arms, and leg rings separately, then sew them together on a flat surface. The straight torso hides the inner arm ends. Each leg starts as a chain ring and is shaped into a long loop during assembly.
The pattern below is an original interpretation inspired by the golden reference. It gives the construction and stitch counts for this version. Use the photographs for the intended silhouette and the diagrams for crochet placement.

Golden Crochet Gingerbread Materials
- Smooth golden-yellow yarn for all six crocheted pieces. A firm cotton or cotton blend makes the open leg edges easy to shape.
- A hook suited to the yarn, tapestry needle, scissors, and removable stitch markers.
- White-and-yellow twisted craft cord for the neck bow and hanger. Choose a soft cord that passes through your sewing needle or can be secured with matching thread.
- Optional rustproof pins and a blocking surface.
Use the same hook and yarn for every crocheted piece. This decorative ornament has flexible gauge. Finished dimensions and yarn consumption depend on your materials. The leg centers stay open, so use a stitch tension that gives their narrow bands enough structure.
US Crochet Abbreviations
- MR = magic ring
- ch = chain
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- st(s) = stitch(es)
For hdc, yarn over, insert the hook, yarn over and draw up a loop, then yarn over and draw through all three loops. Beginning chains and joining slip stitches are excluded from the working stitch counts. The Craft Yarn Council abbreviation guide covers the US terms used here.
Golden Crochet Gingerbread Pattern
Round head
Round 1. Make an MR and ch 2. Work 12 hdc into the ring. Close the ring and sl st to the first hdc. 12 hdc.
Round 2. Ch 2, work 2 hdc in each stitch, and sl st to the first hdc. 24 hdc. Fasten off with a sewing tail. Secure the MR tail through the backs of the stitches.
Straight torso
Foundation and Row 1. Ch 7. Sc in the second ch from the hook and in each remaining ch. 6 sc.
Rows 2–8. Turn, ch 1, and sc in all 6 sts. Keep the first and last stitches of each row marked if they are difficult to see. After Row 8, fasten off with a sewing tail. 6 sc per row, 48 sc in total.
The foundation edge sits beneath the head, and Row 8 is the lower edge for the leg attachments. Lay the panel flat and check that all eight rows have six stitches before adding the other pieces.
Oval arms, make two
Ch 5. Starting in the second ch from the hook, work 1 hdc in each of the next 3 chains, then 5 hdc in the last chain. Rotate the work to crochet along the unused underside loops. Hdc in each of the next 2 chains, then work 4 hdc into the first worked chain, which already holds the first hdc. Sl st to the first hdc and fasten off with a sewing tail.
Count 14 hdc. There are five stitches around each rounded end and two stitches along each side. The arm is one oval round around both sides of the chain. The skipped starting chain is excluded from the count.
Open loop legs, make two
Foundation. Ch 24 loosely. Lay the chain flat, check that it has no twist, and sl st to the first chain to form a ring.
Round 1. Ch 1 and sc once into each of the 24 foundation chains. Sl st to the first sc. 24 sc.
Round 2. Ch 1 and sc in every stitch. Sl st to the first sc and fasten off with a sewing tail. 24 sc. Work both rounds with the same side facing you.
Shape each ring into a teardrop by pinching one small section at the top and rounding the opposite end. Keep the center hollow. Four adjacent stitches near the joins form the top attachment area. The remaining band falls below the torso.
Assemble the Golden Crochet Gingerbread
- Place the torso flat with the foundation edge at the top. Center the head just above it, overlapping the lower head edge slightly. Sew the six foundation stitches to adjacent stitches on the lower head edge.
- Place the arms behind the upper torso, just beneath the head. Let their rounded outer ends project to the sides. Sew each inner arm end through several torso stitches, checking that the arms sit at equal heights.
- Pinch the top of one leg ring and set its four-stitch attachment area behind the left half of the lower torso edge. Sew it securely through both layers. Attach the second ring behind the right half, allowing a small overlap at the inner top corners.
- Spread the loops gently outward so their open centers remain visible and their rounded bottoms sit level. Add a second sewing pass at each upper attachment.
- Tie the two-tone cord into a small bow around the neck area. Sew through the bow knot and the torso with matching thread to hold it in place.
- Fold another piece of cord into a hanging loop and secure both ends to the back of the head near the top. Adjust the loop before trimming the cord, then weave or secure every tail.
If your yarn permits damp blocking, shape the six crocheted pieces before final assembly. Pin the torso square and ease the two rings into matching teardrops. Let them dry fully, then sew them together. Recheck the hanging balance before completing the cord bow.
Count Check
| Piece | Count |
|---|---|
| Head | 12 hdc, then 24 hdc |
| Torso | 6 sc in each of 8 rows |
| Each arm | 14 hdc around a ch-5 foundation |
| Each leg | Ch 24 ring, then two rounds of 24 sc |
Troubleshooting
The leg band twists
Check the foundation ring before making Round 1. Every chain should face the same way around the loop. A twist in the starting ring remains in the finished band, so undo it and rejoin the foundation before continuing.
The open legs collapse against one another
Spread the attachment areas across the two halves of the torso. Sew each ring through a short four-stitch section instead of suspending it from a single stitch. Shape the rounded bottoms apart before securing the last sewing pass.
An arm curls into a cup
Count five hdc at each rounded end and two along each side. The first worked chain holds five hdc in total, including the first stitch made. Keep the foundation loose enough that the underside loops remain accessible.
The head tilts when hung
Check the hanger at the top center of the head and the torso directly beneath it. Add a few sewing stitches along the head-to-torso seam if the narrow join pivots. Keep the bow knot small enough that it sits against the torso.
More Festive Crochet Motifs
The flat crochet gingerbread man uses a round belly and filled oval limbs. Pair this open-leg version with a two-round crochet star or a tiered crochet Christmas tree for a set of small ornaments.
