Christmas Flower Granny Square – Free Pattern with Wreath Variation

Advertisements

A Christmas flower granny square brings a white center, raised red petals and green granny groups into a small festive motif. Two white squaring rounds frame the flower, while a red border ties the colors together.

The same six-round construction also makes a wreath variation. Change the petal round to green, add six embroidered red berries and secure a small yarn bow on the surface. You can make a coordinated pair without learning a second stitch sequence.

Display a square as a diamond with a loop at one corner, or leave off the loop for a sewn-on decoration. The crochet wreath coaster uses a circular outline if you want another green-and-red motif beside it.

How the Christmas flower granny square takes shape

This is an original interpretation inspired by the two motifs in the reference photograph, rather than the exact recipe behind them. The written version has twelve three-double-crochet clusters, followed by a green group round and three square rounds. The photographs illustrate the intended styling; the instructions and chart define the stitch placement.

The stitch arithmetic has been checked, but the design has not been physically tested. No measured gauge, finished dimensions or yarn consumption is supplied. Make one square in your chosen yarn before planning a matching set. These open motifs are decorative pieces; the pattern does not establish heat protection for handling hot cookware.

Materials for a Christmas flower granny square

  • Smooth yarn of the same weight in white, red and green. A plied cotton yarn helps the clusters and chain spaces remain visible.
  • A suitable hook for your yarn; a 3.5 mm hook is a starting suggestion for light or medium yarn, adjusted to the yarn label and fabric.
  • A blunt yarn needle, scissors and four removable markers for the first square corners.
  • A blocking surface and rustproof pins, if appropriate for the yarn.

Use the same yarn type and hook for both versions. A much thicker red yarn can make the border wave even when the stitch count is right. For the embroidered berries, a slightly finer red strand can sit more neatly on a firm cluster.

US abbreviations and the cluster stitch

ch = chain; dc = double crochet; tr = treble crochet; sl st = slip stitch; st/sts = stitch/stitches; sp = space; MR = magic ring; 3dc-cl = three-double-crochet cluster worked into one stitch and closed together. The Craft Yarn Council abbreviation guide explains standard US stitch names.

To make 3dc-cl, yarn over, insert into the indicated stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, then yarn over and draw through two loops. Leave the last loop of that partial dc on the hook. Repeat the same partial dc twice more in the same stitch. You now have four loops on the hook; yarn over and draw through all four. The three partial dc share one top and count as one cluster.

A 3-dc group is different: work three complete dc into one chain space, each with its own top. A dc corner is (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in one space. Round 4 instead uses a taller tr corner: (3 tr, ch 2, 3 tr). For tr, yarn over twice, draw up a loop, then yarn over and draw through two loops three times. Keep these three instructions distinct; replacing a cluster with a group changes the petal round.

Fasten off after every round, including consecutive rounds of the same color. Attach yarn at the stated stitch or space to begin the next round. This avoids extra traveling slip stitches and gives both versions the same chart. Every beginning ch 2 is for height and never counts as a dc or cluster. Do not turn between rounds.

Christmas flower granny square: the six rounds

Round 1: white center

Make an MR with white. Ch 2, work 12 dc into the ring and close the ring gently. Join with a sl st to the first dc, not to the beginning chain. Fasten off. 12 dc.

Round 2: twelve raised petals

Attach red for the flower, or green for the wreath, to any dc. Ch 2. Repeat (3dc-cl in next st, ch 2) twelve times, beginning with the stitch where you attached the yarn. Join to the top of the first cluster and fasten off. 12 clusters and 12 ch-2 spaces.

There is one cluster in each Round 1 dc, with a ch-2 space after every cluster, including the last. Do not work a closing chain inside the cluster itself; the stated ch 2 supplies the entire space between petals.

Round 3: green groups

Attach green in any ch-2 space. Ch 2. Work (3 dc in the space, ch 1) in each of the twelve ch-2 spaces around. Join to the first dc and fasten off. 36 dc in 12 groups, with 12 ch-1 spaces.

Work into the spaces, not into the cluster tops. The green groups should sit between the raised petals. For the wreath version, the two consecutive green rounds create a broader band around the white center.

Round 4: place four corners

Choose a Round 3 ch-1 space and call it space 1. Count around in the direction of work and mark spaces 1, 4, 7 and 10. These four evenly spaced gaps will become corners. There are two unmarked spaces between neighboring markers.

Attach white in the first marked space and ch 2. Repeat the following section four times: (3 tr, ch 2, 3 tr) in marked space, ch 1, 3 dc in next space, ch 1, 3 dc in next space, ch 1. After the fourth section, join to the first tr and fasten off. 24 tr and 24 dc, 12 side ch-1 spaces and 4 corner ch-2 spaces.

Each corner has six tr; each of the eight unmarked spaces has three dc. That gives 24 tr + 24 dc = 48 working stitches. The taller corner stitches help bridge the diagonal distance from the round center. Do not place another corner in the first space when closing the round.

Round 5: white granny frame

Attach white in any corner ch-2 space and ch 2. Repeat four times: (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in corner space; ch 1; (3 dc in next side ch-1 space, ch 1) three times. Join to the first dc and fasten off. 60 dc, 16 side ch-1 spaces and 4 corner ch-2 spaces.

There are three side spaces to fill between each pair of corners. The ch 1 after the final side group separates that group from the next corner. Leave the stitch tops from Round 4 unworked; all new groups go into chain spaces.

Round 6: red border

Attach red in any corner ch-2 space and ch 2. Repeat four times: (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in corner space; ch 1; (3 dc in next side ch-1 space, ch 1) four times. Join to the first dc, fasten off and weave in the tails. 72 dc, 20 side ch-1 spaces and 4 corner ch-2 spaces.

Round 6 fills four side gaps per side. Its four corners remain ch-2 spaces, so the red border keeps the square outline without adding a separate solid edging round.

Add the wreath berries and yarn bow

For the green wreath version, embroider one small red French knot on every other Round 2 cluster, making six berries. Bring the needle up through the body of a cluster, wrap the strand twice around the needle, and insert beside the exit point while holding the wraps gently. Draw the yarn through without pulling the knot into the fabric. Keep the intervening chain spaces open.

Tie a short length of red yarn into a small bow. Sew through its center knot several times onto the lower green area, catching firm crochet fabric on the back. Trim the tails only after the knot is secured. Rotate the square first if you intend to hang it as a diamond, then position the bow at the visual bottom.

The berries and bow are optional surface details. They do not add crochet rounds or change any count in the table. Leave them off the red flower version to keep its raised petals unobstructed.

Block the square and add a hanger

Weave each tail through the backs of several same-color stitches, changing direction before trimming. Block according to the yarn label, pinning the four corners into a square without forcing the center flat. The cluster tops should retain their raised shape.

For an optional hanger, use red to ch 16 and fasten off with a tail at each end. Fold the chain into a loop and sew both ends to the back of one red corner. Pass through several nearby stitches so the weight is distributed beyond the corner chains. The separate loop is shown in the complete chart.

If the square twists or the border ripples

The center has fewer than twelve petals: check that each Round 1 dc received one cluster and that no beginning ch 2 was counted as a stitch. Count the cluster tops separately from the spaces before starting the green round.

One side is longer: recheck the first four corner markers. They belong in every third Round 3 space. Uneven corner placement cannot be corrected by pulling the border into shape during blocking.

The white frame waves: count groups and side spaces. Round 4 has two ordinary groups between corners, Round 5 has three and Round 6 has four. Extra groups in stitch tops add fabric that the written round does not allow.

The center cups: first check that every Round 2 cluster is followed by ch 2 and every Round 3 group by ch 1. If counts and spaces are correct, assess yarn tension and hook choice before repeating the motif. Blocking should refine the outline, not rescue omitted spaces.

Use the Christmas flower granny square

Make the two color versions as a coordinated pair, or repeat one palette for a garland. For a different square with stitched greenery, try the evergreen sprig granny square. The crochet poinsettia ornament gives you a separate-petal flower for the same seasonal display.

The first diagram shows every stitch and chain for the six-round square and its optional hanger. Change only Round 2 from red to green for the wreath. The detail guides explain cluster closure, corner spacing and finishing. The chart follows the written counts and is not a claim of physical testing.
